Izvor: GSM ArenaApple has record breaking quarter, iPhone and Mac sales up
The iPhone 4's controversial antenna may experience drops in signal, but there's no dropping when it comes to Apple's financial results. They exceeded even Apple's own expectations leading them to break all sorts of records.
In the third fiscal quarter of 2010 (which ends on June 26), Apple's revenue is 15.7 billion US dollars and the net profit is 3.25 billion dollars. Just an year ago those figures were 9.73 billion dollars revenue and 1.83 billion dollars net profit.
The record income comes from record sales - 8.4 million iPhones were sold during the quarter (an astonishing 61% growth compared to last year's third quarter) and the Mac lineup of computers sold 33% more units as well. The iPads reached 3.27 million units sold.
About 52% of the revenue is due to international sales. It seems the only things that have fallen down are the iPod sales, which took an 8% dip (not really unexpected), and the gross margin which fell to 39.1% (down from 40.9%).
All eyes are on the fourth quarter now - and Apple has some bright plans for it. They are predicting a revenue of 18 billion US dollars for Q4. Considering they over-fulfilled their expectations for this quarter, they'll probably reach that goal and maybe even go further.

Nokia profits slump 40% in second quarter
Nokia phone in back pocket Nokia has struggled in the smartphone market
Profits at Finnish mobile phone handset company Nokia slumped by 40% in the second quarter compared with the previous year.
The firm announced profits of a mere 227m euros ($291m; £191m) for the three months ending in June.
Nokia warned last month that it expected its sales and profits figures to fall short of earlier forecasts.
The company has struggled to compete since Apple and Google entered the market with their new smartphones.
'Mixed bag'
The results saw the company's share price swing violently in a 10% range, first down and then up. It was trading up 3.6% as of midday BST.
Analysts said the second quarter numbers - and Nokia's decision to leave its full-year forecast unchanged - were largely in line with expectations.
"It's a bit of a mixed bag," said Richard Windsor, equity analyst at Nomura. "The margin guidance for [the third quarter] is, I think, quite a lot worse than some people were looking for."
"At the same time, they're more optimistic for the [fourth quarter]," he added. "But that's on the back of a vastly improved smartphone portfolio, and we're not that convinced about that."
Under pressure
The poor results will put increasing pressure on Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, a lifelong Nokia employee and its chief executive since 2006, amid speculation that he may be ousted.
The mobile phone manufacturer has had to issue two profit warnings during the last three months and has already undergone a recent management restructuring.
The company declined to make any comment about Mr Kallasvuo's future.
"There has been a lot of speculation on my position, on myself, during the last couple of weeks and that is not good for Nokia and must be brought to an end one way or another," the chief executive told CNBC.
Shrinking margins
The company reported a 1% increase in overall revenues to 10m euros, helped by an 8% rise in the volume of mobile device sales.
However, profit margins at the important "devices and services" unit, which produces the company's handsets, were squeezed to 9.5% in the quarter from 12.2% a year ago, as the company was forced to cut its prices to compete.
This resulted in a 19% fall in the division's underlying operating profits.

Evo i sa GSM Arene izvestaja o Nokiji:
Nokia Q2 results are out, profits fall as smartphones get cheaper
And the results are in - Nokia just announced their Q2 financial results. To summarize - sales are up, profits are down, shifting currency exchange rates didn't help and smartphones have sold more units and have gotten cheaper, compared to previous periods.
The net sales for the Nokia Corporation 10 005 million euro (12.842 billion US dollars) and the net operating profit is 660 million euro. Net sales are 1% higher than the year ago quarter and 5% higher the previous quarter. However, operating profit has fallen.
Looking at just the mobile phone division, it has net sales of 6 800 million euro (3% higher YoY and 2% higher QoQ) and 643 million euro operating profit - 16% down YoY and 23% down QoQ.
"Converged mobile devices" (that is smartphones and mobile computers) accounted for just over half of those sales. That's 12% more sales than converged devices managed in last year's second quarter.
This is likely due to the noticeable drop in the average selling price for smartphones - it's 143 euro (184 USD) for the second quarter of this year, down from 181 euro (232 USD) for last years Q2. That's a 21% drop. Feature phones have a mostly stable average selling price of 39 euro.
Nokia attributes the falling gross margins to "price pressure" in the high-end segment and depreciation of the euro. Industry-wide shortages of some components had a negative impact on sales and Nokia predicts those shortages will continue into the third quarter as well.

Izvestaj o LG brendu:
Izvor: GSM ArenaLG Q2 financial results are in, better than the previous quarter
LG released their quarterly results for the three months ending in June and they're doing well overall - except the mobile department. R&D investments and expanding into emerging markets costs ate into the profit from the mobile phones, which were actually more than the same period of last year.
The net results for LG are 14.4 trillion Korean won in sales (12.4 billion US dollars) and operating profit of 126 billion KRW (108 million USD). Net profit declined 33% in won and 26% in USD compared to the same quarter of last year.
LG shipped 30.6 million phones this quarter, which is a 13% increase over than the previous quarter. The income however only rose 5.8%. Compared to the same quarter of last year, that's 2% more phones sold but a 29.5% decline in income. LG explains the falling operating profit margin with investments in R&D and costs related to expansion into new markets.
Other departments of LG had a strong quarter and offset the loss from the mobile division. As for the next quarter, they are expecting a "modest growth" and promise to "continue to introduce new products in major categories including smartphones".
Looking through our news section, we can't see all that many announcements from LG in the recent months. "Continuing" that trend can't be a good strategy, can it? But maybe all that cash poured into R&D will pay off with great new products - like maybe something even better than the canceled MeeGo-powered LG GW990 and that actually reaches the market (fingers crossed).

Izvor GSM ArenaMotorola ends fiscal Q2 with healthy profit
Motorola is obviously just about at the end of the tunnel as their financial results are starting to get better and better. This time around the company reported 162 million US dollars of profit, which compares very favorably to the 26 millions earned for the same period last year.
Of course what interests us the most is Motorola mobile division, which managed to push 8.7 million handsets for the past three months. Those generated 1.7 billion dollars of revenue and 87 million dollars of profit. Okay it's not like they are lighting their Cuban cigars with Benjamins in the Moto HQ, but it's certainly good enough considering their recent track record.
The bad news is that some legal statement brought them 228 million dollars that certainly added for the positive financial result and it's unlikely that such a thing will happen again next quarter. So Motorola will need to keep up the hard work and hope that by the time the mobile division gets separated it can continue to be in the black, relying on sales alone.
Releasing more devices like the Motorola Droid X, which enjoyed a great reception in the US will certainly help. And fitting some GSM radios in those might help in the rest of the world warming up towards Motorola too.
Inace lepo od Motorole,lepa vest.

Samsung Q2 2010 financial report is out, growth slows down a bit
After the impressive start of the year Samsung's growth slowed down a tad during the second quarter of the year. Nevertheless, the financial report shows that the company is still doing quite fine and situation is expected to get even better in the second half of the year.
Samsung has just announced its Q2 2010 financial report. The South Korean company sold good 63.8 million handsets which makes 22 percent more units than last year's second quarter and less than a 1 percent decrease when compared to Q1 2010.
In total Samsung earned some 6.81 billion US dollars, which is a 5% sales decrease Year-on-Year. As far as the operating profit of around 533 million US dollars is concerned, it marks a 3.6% decrease Year-on-Year.
The growth is slowing down a bit which is a result of the lowered average handset selling price and the European economy's slowdown.
However, this is said to change in the second half of the year when Samsung expects to sell not only 10% more feature phones but some 20% more smartphones as well (such as the Android-running Samsung I9000 Galaxy S and the Bada-powered Samsung S8500 Wave), which will increase the average selling price and should bring better financial results.
So, in H2 2010 the demand is said to increase by 15% due to the strong seasonality. And while smartphones will generate good profits in the developed markets, more 3G and full touch devices are expected to be sold in the emerging markets.
Outlook is good for Samsung and we are not surprised to hear that especially when keeping in mind the great devices that the company released recently and is about to release in the near future (such as the Galaxy S successor which is said to arrive next year).

Smartphone market grows in Q2 2010, Android steams ahead
Android continues to proliferate as the smartphone market grows. The smartphone market grew 64% in Q2 compared to last year and all indications point to sustained growth. All major companies are experiencing growths in the numbers of shipped smartphones.
But it's Android that takes the cake - year-on-year basis it grew an astonishing 886% in the second quarter. Smartphone market grew 41% in the US with 14.7 million units shipped. Android devices accounted for 34% of those shipments. Almost a quarter of smartphones shipped worldwide are in the US, which retains its position as the biggest market for those devices.
Android is also doing well in China (which is the world's second largest smartphone market). From almost no shipments an year ago, in Q2 2010 Android grabbed a 7% market share in China - 475 thousand units shipped. China's home-brewed OMS platform (Open Mobile System) a.k.a. OPhone, which is based on Android, managed 174 thousand units too and should continue to grow.
Nokia remains the world leader in smartphone shipments with a record 23.8 million units shipped for a 41% growth year-on-year. It's currently enjoying a 38% market share thanks to affordable smartphones like the Nokia 5230.
Estimates put RIM in second place with 18% market share and strong positions in North and South America with the BlackBerry Curve 8520 pointed out as a strong seller. Apple slots in third position with a 13% market share for Q2. Their shipments were unaffected by all launch issues with the iPhone 4 and grew up to 61%.

Izvor: ComputerworldOracle has filed a lawsuit against Google, charging that its Android phone software infringes Oracle patents and copyrights related to Java, Oracle said Thursday.
"In developing Android, Google knowingly, directly and repeatedly infringed Oracle's Java-related intellectual property. This lawsuit seeks appropriate remedies for their infringement," Oracle spokeswoman Karen Tillman said in a statement.
The suit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco and seeks a jury trial.
Google could not immediately be reached for comment on the lawsuit.
Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems' Java technology when it bought the company earlier this year. Java is a software environment that allows applications written in Java to run on virtually any computer so long as it has a Java virtual machine installed.
When Google developed Android, it included a Java compatible technology called Dalvik with the phone OS. Dalvik was developed as a "clean room" version of Java, meaning Google built it from the ground up without using any Sun technology or intellectual property, said Gartner analyst Ken Dulaney.
"You can't just take a Java application from a Sun environment, where it's licensed, and run it on Android. You have to recompile it to Dalvik," Dulaney said.
Oracle says Dalvik is a competitor to Java and infringes several of its patents, which it lists in the complaint, and its Java copyright.
It was unclear Thursday whether Oracle approached Google to discuss its concerns before it filed the lawsuit.
Oracle's motivation was probably Android's recent success in the smartphone market, Dulaney said. "They own Sun now and they want to collect the royalties on the language," he said.
Oracle alleges that Google was aware of its patents and "willfully and deliberately" infringed them. It also says Google hired some of Sun's Java engineers. It wants the court to block the alleged infringement and award it damages.
Dulaney said Oracle's case could be "hard to prove" and that a legal battle could take a long time. "What they'll have to argue about is whether Google did a purely clean-room Java or if they have someone with inside knowledge of the code," he said.
Dalvik is one option for writing Android applications; developers can also use HTML 5 and the C language. But Dalvik is used for some of the core Android applications, such as email, Dulaney said.
Sad cika Stevica i Apple zadovoljno trljaju ruke.

Novi Guinessov rekord u brzini pisanja SMS

Izvor : MikroIntel i Nokia otvorili zajednički istraživački centar

Izvor: GSM ArenaThere are some good times ahead for smartphones, say market analysts from IDC. Smartphone market share is expected to grow by over 50% and oddly iOS will be declining in the future, with Android and Windows gaining ground.
IDC analysts actually had to increase their prediction of how much the smartphone market will grow this year by as much as 10%. That means they expect a healthy 269.6 million smartphones to ship by the end of the year, a huge improvement over the 173.5 million number from last year. That's a growth of 55.4%.
The overall phone market is growing faster than anticipated too - in 2010 the market should grow by 14.1% (1.5% higher than initial estimates). In the coming years, smartphone market will keep growing though at a slower pace - 24.5% in 2011 and only 13.6% in 2014.
Speaking of 2014, here are some interesting estimates IDC has prepared on the smartphone OS market share four years in the future. Symbian will keep the number 1 spot, though with smaller share. Android will snatch the number two spot and Windows will grow to just below 10%.
BlackBerry OS is expected to retain its current share (though it will slip to third place). Interestingly though iOS share will drop by 25% in the next four years. We'll have to wait and see if these predictions pan out - but if they do, the Redmond OS will nearly equal the Cupertino OS market share in 2014.

Izvor: MikroAndroid pretekao Windows Mobile u SAD
